The Time & Talents Association in Rotherhithe is launching a new venture this month, offering bridge classes for beginners at its Centre in St Marychurch Street. It is hoped that this will be the first step towards establishing a thriving bridge club for local residents, providing a new focus of activity in the community.

With over 20,000 people learning to play every year, bridge is one of Britain’s fastest growing leisure activities but, until now, there has been no opportunity to learn in the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey area. All that will change when Carol Magner starts teaching Bridge for All classes on Monday evenings at 7.30pm from 18 September 2000. A local resident herself, Carol has been an enthusiastic bridge player for over twenty years and she aims to show that bridge can be fun as well as stimulating for the grey cells.

The English Bridge Union, the national organisation for bridge, has launched Bridge for All as a complete learn and play programme. It has been designed for easy learning, with the emphasis on playing the cards rather than listening to a lecture! Anyone who enrols will learn the Standard English system, enabling them to play anywhere in the country or on a bridge holiday abroad, and they will receive the Bridge for All Student Pack, which contains high quality materials for learning and practice, produced by experts.

It’s never too late to start playing bridge, even if you’ve never played cards before. It’s a very social game and can be enjoyed at whatever level is right for you. To prove that there’s no mystique, Carol and some friends will be playing bridge near the fountain in the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre on Sunday 17 September from 1pm. Anyone who’s interested is welcome to come along and watch a game in progress or chat with Carol and the other players. Further information is also available from Time & Talents on 020 7231 7845.
