Former EastEnders TV star Michael Cashman, now one of Labour's MEPs for the West Midlands region, threw a lavish party to raise vitally needed funds for Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for the constituency of North Southwark & Bermondsey, Kingsley Abrams. Over 50 party-goers raised £600 in four hours on Sunday 4th March at Michael's flat in London Bridge.
Three MEP's came along - Michael himself, Richard Balfe and Mary Honeyball who both represent London for Labour at the Brussels-based parliament of the European Union. Members signalled their resounding support for Kingsley from across London including the constituencies of Bexley, Deptford, Peckham and Camberwell, Lewisham, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich. Through a raffle, donations and the launch of the Vice Chair John Hellings' new 100 Club, Kingsley soon had over £600 to put in the election campaign bank account, or rather our Treasurer David Savage did.
"It was marvellous to see so many familiar faces and some many new ones too," said Michael afterwards before driving to the Eurotunnel to take him back to Brussels.
"I'm really glad the constituency is showing magnificent support for Kingsley and his campaign and I know he will win with this sort of support and enthusiasm and cash, of course."
It was the third time Michael had hosted parties for Labour at his flat, the last two being in Dockyard Ward when he was a member here before 2000. Constituency Vice Chair in charge of fundraising John Hellings, who promoted Michael's party throughout Labour, used the occasion to launch the CLP's new big-money prize 100 Club.
Michaels social for Labour members is part of North Southwark & Bermondsey Constituency Labour Partys election campaign 2001. Mike is also very kindly laying on all the catering. (Suggested entry donation: £5/£2 concessions)
