Voters in Southwark (or the 11.2% who managed to get out to vote) decided by more than 2 to 1 to continue with the Leader and Cabinet model introduced by the Labour Group, rather than having a directly elected executive Mayor.
The voting was:
Directly elected Mayor: 6,054
Leader and Cabinet: 13,217
Spoilt papers: 48
It was a pity that Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors had previously joined forces to block a "postal vote only" referendum, which would have boosted the low turnout and would have avoided the need to close many schools across the borough on voting day.
