The battle for Bermondsey is on as a broad coalition of MPs and Greater London Assembly members across the political spectrum of the Labour Party gather to Fight for Bermondsey on Tuesday 20th March 2001 at a Public Rally hosted by Kingsley Abrams, Labours parliamentary spokesman for the constituency of North Southwark & Bermondsey.
"I am proud to confirm that Tony Benn MP will be coming to speak," said Kingsley Abrams, who is also manager of the Rockingham Community Centre at the Elephant and Castle.
Also topping the bill alongside Tony Benn, is Bethnal Green Labour MP Oona King, and Islington Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn. Taking timeout from the GLA will be its Chair, the former TV presenter Labours Trevor Phillips and Bermondseys Labour Assembly Member Val Shawcross. Invited is London Mayor Ken Livingstone (to be confirmed).
The Rally starts at 7 pm at the Grand Lecture theatre of the Clubland Methodist Centre, Grosvenor Terrace, on the corner of Camberwell Road and Albany Road, SE15. All are welcome. (Buses:12, 35, 42, 68, 168, 171).
"I want to deliver to the people of Bermondsey. There is so much to be done on the big regeneration and redevelopment schemes in Elephant & Castle, Bermondsey Spa and Canada Water, a new-style City Academy secondary school for Bermondsey, on housing, health and schools, to helping the less well-off and bringing community facilities into Bermondsey which has for too long been starved, neglected and forgotten.
"Tony Benn and Oona King, Jeremy Corbyn and Trevor Phillips, and my GLA colleague Val Shawcross all want to put Bermondsey at the top of the priority list for central government in future. Theyre coming here to prove their support for Bermondsey," Kingsley said.
