1. AREA UNDER DISCUSSION.
The Canada Water Master Plan Area ( Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Wards).
2. CURRENT SITUATION
PRIMARY & SECONDARY
* 7 primary schools ( approx. 2220 places Nursery to Y6 )
* 1 City Technology secondary school ( approx. 1260 places ).
* The majority of the primary schools have waiting lists for every year group.
* Every year approx. 260 Y6 local children compete for approx. 180 local secondary places.
* This mismatch results in many children having to accept secondary placements across the Borough or outside the Borough. Many local children spend circa two hours a day travelling to and from school.
* Many families move out of the district when their children reach Y6.
FURTHER EDUCATION
* Southwark College – on the fringe of the area in question
SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS
1 of the mainstream primary schools is resourced for 11 hearing impaired pupils and other special needs.
AFTER SCHOOL CARE
Formal After School Care is provided at several primary schools. Approx. 214 places are available
0 – 3 YEARS CARE
Approx. 200 formal places available
3. SCHEMES IN THE PIPELINE
* Plans are in hand for a new City of London Academy ( Patterson Park) to serve the north of the Borough. If planning consent is granted in the very near future, it is envisaged that this school will open for atleast a Y7 intake in September 2003.
* Southwark Childcare First are committed to maximising opportunities to secure high quality child care places, both during term time and school holidays
* Southwark Education & Lifelong Learning Aims to extend school opening hours and access to facilities and put education for all age groups at the heart of regeneration of the Borough so as to improve employability.
* Education White Paper (2001) encourages diversity of secondary education
* Additional, easily accessible, quality all year round education provision for 0 – 18 years
* Additional SEN provision for the whole spectrum of needs
* Additional, easily accessible, quality education (vocational, academic and extra curricular) provision for 18 plus years.
* Provision must take into account transport links.
* Local employers and adult learning organisations to provide child care facilities
* Ensure local pupils are able to benefit from the employment & work placement opportunities that will arise
* Ensure that the housing mix has sufficient affordable, family accommodation thus helping stem the teacher shortage and halt the trend towards a skewed population mix in the area.
* Use the development as an opportunity to extend the excellence in local schools so that they continue to be valued by existing and new residents and businesses.
* Provision in all sectors of education must reflect the number of places needed in the locality to service the needs of the current and predicted population of the area.
