Responsible for co-ordination of statistical information to determine new maps for UK assisted areas (Articles 93(2)(a)&(c) EC) and for UK areas eligible under Objectives 1&2 of the Structural Funds (Articles 130a-e EC). Other work includes:

• briefing on regional policy implications of possible changes to UK NUTS areas at levels 1-5;

• policy responsibility for relationship between the two maps, advice to UK negotiators on regulations, suitable eligibility criteria, population coverage and financial profiles for the Structural Funds, and discussions with the Commission on UK proposals for Assisted Areas;

• acting as policy advisor both on Assisted Areas and on Structural Funds issues;

• drafting the formal UK observations on the Commission's guidelines for regional aid;

• estimating the regional population and financial impact of the Commission's proposals on other Member States and thus predicting their policy concerns;

• construction and presentation of the proposed Structural Funds, Assisted Areas and Enterprise Grant Area maps;

• targets for DTI Public Service Agreements on regional growth and for Regional Development Agencies.
