Southwark Council Elections

Southwark Labour Party

In the Council elections on 4 May 2006, Southwark again remained under no overall control, and the local Labour Party campaign pushed the Lib-Dems backwards from the 2002 elections. Our thanks go to those who voted Labour, to our candidates, to those who campaigned so hard. Congratulations to local Labour Party members Fiona Colley on her re-election as a councillor in Nunhead, and to Mary Foulkes winning in Livesey and Evrim Laws in Peckham Rye. In Southwark the state of the parties is

Labour 28 seats
Lib-Dem 28 seats
Con 6 seats
Green 1 seats

The local results in Rotherhithe (the westen part of the peninsula) and Surrey Docks (the eastern part) are here; Labour councillors elected across the rest of Southwark are listed below. With a turnout of 28% in the two wards, the total votes for the Labour Party candidates in Rotherhithe ward rose by 38% compared with 2002 and in Surrey Docks by a stunning 75%.

Compared with the 2002 elections, the Labour Party gained three seats in Livesey ward and two seats in East Walworth after intensive campaigns in both wards, bringing back Labour councillors to North Southwark and Bermondsey. (We also came within 8 votes of winning a seat in Chaucer ward). Sadly, this was exactly offset by losses further south of three seats in East Dulwich, one in Village and one in South Camberwell. So congratulations to our neighbours in the Lambeth Labour Party who gained a stunning net 10 seats to retake control from their LIb-Dem/Conservative alliance. The elected Labour councillors in Southwark are:

Brunswick Park
