Election 2004:

Val Shawcross wins Southwark and Lambeth

Ken Livingstone wins London

Claude Moraes, Mary Honeyball and Robert Evans chosen as London MEPs

All five re-elected!

In the elections on 10 June 2004 (details below), Val Shawcross (Labour) was re-elected as Southwark and Lambeth representative on the Greater London Assembly; the Labour Party won seven seats in total. Ken Livingstone (Labour) was re-elected Mayor of London. Labour's 3 London MEPs Claude Moraes, Mary Honeyball and Robert Evans (Labour) were re-elected. In the Assembly elections the number of Labour votes locally was similar to the 2000 vote; Ken Livingstone's number of votes locally went up. Labour's number of votes for the European Parliament elections went up across London compared with the 1999 vote.

Our thanks to everybody who voted for the Labour Party candidates.

The Liberal Democrats failed to win locally in the GLA elections despite running both Southwark and Lambeth councils, and Simon Hughes did worse locally than the rest of his party when standing for mayor, despite being an MP in the area; he did even worse across London. In Southwark, the ruling LibDems did disasterously in the European elections, with just 23.5% of the vote compared with about 40% in the 2002 vote.

from before the election:

How to vote Labour on Thursday 10 June:

There are three ballot papers, and you have five votes.

London Assembly, 2 votes:

  • put an X next to Val SHAWCROSS (the Labour Party candidate); and

  • put another X in the Labour Party box on the right hand side.
The London-wide Labour Party candidates are Nicky Gavron; Murad Qureshi; Samantha Heath; Sally Mulready; Abdul Asad; Karen Hunte; Virendra Sharma; Martin Lindsay; Bernadette Lappage; Raj Chandarana; Abdal Ullah.

The first vote is make sure we have a campaigning Labour representative for Southwark and Lambeth, while the second affects how many seats Labour wins in total in the Assembly. You need to vote Labour both times.

Mayor of London, 2 votes:

  • put an X in the first box next to Ken LIVINGSTONE (the Labour Party candidate);

  • you don’t need to vote in the second column but can do if you wish.

The first vote is for your first choice candidate, and the other for your second choice if you have one. The first will be counted; the second only if your first choice is not in the top two.

European Parliament, 1 vote:

  • put an X in the Labour Party box.
The London-wide Labour Party candidates are Claude Moraes; Mary Honeyball; Robert Evans; Anita Pollack; Hugh Malyan; Stephanie Elsy; Munir Malik; Jane Briginshaw; Joseph Ejiofor.

The number of votes each party gets decides how many MEPs it gets.
