The Time & Talents Association has been involved in community development and social action in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey since 1887. It was started by a group of women who were appalled by the living and working conditions of women and girls in the dock areas of South London. They determined to give their time and talents to change the situation, and they and their successors fostered a great deal of innovative educational and social work from a variety of settlement and club premises over the next 100 years and more.
Today the Association runs a Multi-Purpose Neighbourhood Centre, open to all who live or work in the area. It is housed in a fascinating building - a former Mortuary that celebrated its centenary in 1995. The Centre's current work focuses particularly on Under-5's and over-50's, as these were identified as priorities in a market survey of community needs in 1991. It has also been acknowledged as a centre of excellence in the areas of reminiscence, local history and integrated drama involving people with learning difficulties, and runs a highly successful Table Tennis Club. The involvement of volunteers is an integral part of all work and projects.
Time & Talents is keen to develop new activities and projects that fully reflect the area's changing needs and composition, and to continue its commitment to individual and community development. It is setting up a Home Visiting Scheme for housebound elderly frail people, and is exploring possibilities for young people, in partnership with other groups. It positively welcomes suggestions, enquiries, and offers of involvement or partnership from all sectors of the community.
Time & Talents is a registered charity, managed by an Executive Committee elected at the AGM. Application for membership of the Association is open to all who share its objectives. Please contact the centre.
Time & Talents is supported by the London Borough of Southwark, the (now former) London Docklands Development Corporation, and the Home Office Voluntary Services Unit through the Opportunities for Volunteers scheme, administered via BASSAC (The British Association of Settlements & Social Action Centres, of which Time & Talents is a member). Most of its income, however, comes from grant-making trusts, businesses, fundraising initiatives, and individual donations and covenants from the Friends of Time & Talents. An annual report is available.

As well as the activities and development work run in and beyond the building, Time & Talents offers other valuable assets to the neighbourhood: a delightful Environmental Garden within the small park that surrounds the Centre, tended by volunteers, and a 13 seat Minibus with tail-lift supporting all the activities and available for other affiliated charitable groups to use. The Centre is also used by a number of other community and charitable groups and is available to hire at very reasonable rates for private and corporate hire. With a meeting room and hall, each with distinctive architectural features, and kitchen facilities, it makes an ideal venue for meetings, rehearsal, receptions small exhibitions, seminars or parties.
